First International Conference on Sustainable Airport Pavement Management (1st SAPM) on 24-25 Sep 2024, Singapore

The 1st SAPM was held in Singapore on 24-25 Sep 2024. The two-day conference was jointly organised by Changi Airports International and Pavement Engineering Society (Singapore), and supported by the Centre for Transportation Research of the National University of Singapore. The conference was held at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport Hotel and Park Avenue Changi Hotel on 24 Sep 2024 and 25 Sep 2024 respectively. The conference organizing committee is chaired by Professor Fwa Tien Fang from the National University of Singapore and President of the Pavement Engineering Society (Singapore), and Mr. How Choon Onn from Changi Airports International.

The aim of the SAPM Conference is to provide a common platform for effective sharing of ideas, skills, knowledge, techniques, experiences and good practices among the airport operators, industry and professionals worldwide. Through the presentations, discussions and deliberation at the conference, it is hoped that critical challenges, good airport development practices, new techniques and knowledge would be identified in the process. The technical program of the two-day conference comprises topics of current interest related to sustainable airport pavement management and implementation experience, forums and technical field visit to Samwoh Smart Hub.

The conference was attended by 230 participants from 20 regions and countries including Australia, Brunei, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Philippines, Singapore, Seychelles, Taiwan, Thailand, Uganda, U.S.A. and Vietnam. The conference was sponsored by 19 companies which include contractors, consultants, and materials suppliers etc. 

The welcome address was delivered by the Professor Fwa Tien Fang. This was followed by a keynote lecture by Dr. Navneet Garg from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The 2-day conference comprised a total of 16 presentations and a forum panel discussion on Day 2. The details are listed as follows:

Forum Panel Discussion on Day 2

On Day 2 afternoon, there was a technical field visit to Samwoh Smart Hub which comprises a Samwoh Gallery, R&D Centre and a wide range of pavement testing equipment such as Ground Penetrating Radar, Heavy Falling Weight Deflectometer, Laser Crack Measurement System and Griptester. The site also includes some pavement test sections with different types of asphalt surfaces and trapezoidal grooving.

During the site visit, there was also a dialogue session on “Airport Pavement Rehabilitation” conducted by Mr. How Choon Onn, co-conference chair from Changi Airports International. He shared his experience for the runway resurfacing in Singapore Changi International Airport.
