INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ON PAVEMENT TECHNOLOGY (ICPT)

ICPT Conference International Steering Committee

About ICPT & ICPT Conferences

The International Committee on Pavement Technology (ICPT) is a committee within the Pavement Engineering Society (Singapore) (PES in short, website: https://pavement.org.sg).

PES is a non-profit organization registered with the Registry of Society, Singapore in 1994. The ICPT committee is commissioned by the Council of PES. The committee effectively serves as the ICPT International Steering Committee to administer and manage the operations of the ICPT conference series “International Conference on Road and Airfield Pavement Technology”.

Background

The ICPT Committee was first established in 1992 within the Centre for Transportation Research, National University of Singapore (NUS). In 2017, following a change of conference financing policy by the National University of Singapore, the ICPT committee was transferred to PES to become a part of PES.

The ICPT Conference is held once every two years. The ICPT Committee invites proposals to host each ICPT Conference, and awards a university or tertiary institution to host an ICPT Conference. The ICPT Conference is also endorsed and supported by the Asian Pavement Engineering Society (website: http://www.asian-PES.org).

Objectives of ICPT

Promote pavement technological advancement worldwide

with special emphasis in pavement technological development in developing countries, by encouraging exchange and transfer of pavement technology among professionals and researchers of different countries and regions, through organizing technology transfer activities such as international conferences.

Interaction and exchange of experience

The current focus of ICPT is on the fast developing East Asian regions, with special emphasis on encouraging interaction of pavement professionals and researchers among Asian countries, and exchanging of experience and technology with other parts of the world.

Historical Development

The first ICPT conference was held in Singapore in 1993 as a Southeast Asian regional event focusing on pavement construction and maintenance technology.  This event received highly encouraging response from 6 countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Australia and Singapore.  It was the success and positive experience of the first conference that led to the decision by the NUS Centre for Transportation Research to form the International Committee on Pavement Technology (ICPT) and launch the ICPT series of international conferences, formally known as the International Conference on Road & Airfield Pavement Technology.

It is the intention of ICPT to hold the ICPT conferences in East Asia so as to benefit the professionals in countries of this region.  This has been decided so because of the fact that all major pavement engineering conferences are originated and centered in North America or Europe, and very few participants from East Asia take part in these conferences.  By organizing the conferences, with papers from this region as well as North America, Europe and other parts of the world, it helps to promote pavement engineering R&D in this part of the world.
